
For those who know me, fitness has always been a core part of my life. Having a strong background in health and fitness, I now share my knowledge and passion through my online fitness coaching. However, life took an unexpected turn late last year when I suffered a heart attack while visiting family in Calgary, Alberta. The experience was a wake-up call, prompting me to reevaluate my approach to health and recovery.
Through extensive research and personal reflection, I've developed a self-care routine that not only aids my recovery but also enhances my overall quality of life post-stent operation. These practices are deeply personal but could also inspire others who may be navigating a similar path.
My Daily Self-Care Routine
Morning Quiet Time
My mornings start with stillness and intention. I spend some time reading my Bible and praying, which helps ground me mentally and emotionally for the day ahead. This quiet reflection allows me to focus on gratitude and set positive intentions.
Fitness Routine
Staying active is non-negotiable for me, but I've adjusted my workouts to align with my recovery. My home gym is my sanctuary where I do 30 minutes of exercise daily, incorporating High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) on my echo bike and resistance training with heavy-duty bands. I follow a two-body-part split routine—Chest & Triceps; Back & Biceps; Shoulders & Legs—ensuring a balanced approach. It's part of my lifestyle, and I commit to it seven days a week.
Quality Time
After my workout, I enjoy a coffee date with my spouse, Corrie. It's a cherished moment of connection that keeps our bond strong, offering emotional nourishment alongside physical well-being.
Work and Creativity
My mornings are devoted to helping others through my fitness coaching. I create customized routines for clients, conduct research on health-related topics, and post uplifting content on social media. This purposeful work gives me a sense of fulfillment and drive.
Nutrition and Hydration
I follow intermittent fasting, fasting for 18 to 20 hours before breaking my fast at noon. My meals are mindful, focusing on low-carb, high-protein, and animal-based foods to support my body's recovery and strength. I also prioritize staying hydrated throughout the day to maintain optimal physical function.
Outdoor Activity
Corrie and I enjoy taking a daily 30-to-45 minute walk whenever the weather permits. This simple practice not only promotes cardiovascular health but also encourages mindfulness and connection with nature.
A Lifelong Commitment
Recovery is not about drastic changes but deliberate choices that foster long-term health and happiness. My post-heart-attack routine reflects my commitment to staying fit, focused, and connected to what matters most. It’s not just about survival; it’s about thriving, one day at a time.
